A Tale of Two Leaders and Their Air Travel Expenses: Unveiling the Truth
In a recent development, the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh has sparked a heated debate by releasing documents that shed light on the air travel expenses of YSR Congress party president and former chief minister, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. But here's where it gets controversial...
The documents, obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) act from Andhra Pradesh Aviation Corporation Ltd (APACL), reveal a staggering amount of public money spent on Jagan Mohan Reddy's helicopter and aircraft travel during his five-year tenure, from 2019 to 2024. The total expense? A whopping Rs 222.85 crore, which breaks down to Rs 87.02 crore for helicopters, Rs 112.50 crore for fixed-wing aircraft, and Rs 23.31 crore for boarding, crew, and lodging expenses.
But why is the TDP bringing this up now? It seems they're responding to claims made by Jagan's media house, Sakshi, which stated that TDP leader and state IT minister, Nara Lokesh, had taken "77 flights to Hyderabad" at government expense. However, the RTI replies from Lokesh's departments paint a different picture, confirming that he did not claim a single rupee for official travel and paid for all his flights, including special ones, from his personal income.
The TDP's response is scathing, with a party spokesperson asking, "Sakshi and YSRCP's lies stand clearly exposed. Will Sakshi demand accountability from Jagan?" Lokesh himself took to X (formerly Twitter) to comment, stating, "While people struggled, their CM splurged. Andhra Pradesh deserved a vision, but got a vacation instead."
The TDP further emphasizes that Jagan Mohan Reddy's air travel expenses drained over Rs 222 crore from public funds, while Lokesh's air travel cost the state nothing, as verified by RTI. This stark contrast, they argue, speaks volumes about accountability and leadership.
But here's the part most people miss: Jagan Mohan Reddy was the chief minister during this period, entitled to travel by special flights and helicopters. So, why is the TDP comparing his expenses to Lokesh's? An analyst raises a valid point, suggesting the TDP should disclose former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu's flight expenses during his term from 2014 to 2019 and his current term since June 2024. "How much is he spending on helicopter and special flights now? Let the Aviation Academy disclose the details," they argue.
This story raises questions about the use of public funds, accountability, and the role of the media in political discourse. What do you think? Should leaders be held accountable for their travel expenses, especially when they're entitled to such privileges? Share your thoughts in the comments!
