Portland's Resilience in the Face of Bangor's Persistent Challenge
In a thrilling high school football match, the Bangor Rams embarked on a journey across the state, aiming to dethrone the reigning Class A champions, Portland Bulldogs, and their star quarterback, Cordell Jones, who was also the returning Gatorade Player of the Year.
Despite being the underdogs, the 6-4 Bangor team brought an intense and hard-hitting performance to Portland's Fitzpatrick Stadium, nearly pulling off an upset. The Bulldogs, however, demonstrated their resilience, surviving a barrage of second-half scores from Bangor.
The game's pivotal moment came when Jones, the senior quarterback, showcased his prowess, scoring the final touchdown of the game, his third rushing touchdown of the night. This triumph secured Portland's 30-22 victory, a hard-fought battle that neither team deserved to lose.
Coach David Morris of Bangor had predicted a showdown between Jones and Bangor quarterback Kyle Johnson, and his instincts proved correct. The Bangor defense set the tone early, displaying a gutsy goal-line stand on Portland's initial drive and effectively containing the Bulldogs' powerful offense for much of the first half.
Portland took a 10-0 lead into halftime, but the Bangor offense soon awakened. Johnson, a hard-running quarterback, demonstrated his versatility, faking a quarterback keeper in the red zone and then throwing a jump pass to junior tight end Will Houghton for Bangor's first score, narrowing the gap to 10-7.
Johnson's connection with Houghton continued, resulting in another 25-yard catch and run, setting up a deep strike from Johnson to senior wide receiver Gavin Glanville-True for a Rams touchdown, giving Bangor a 14-10 lead and shifting momentum in their favor.
Jones responded with a 40-yard touchdown run, reclaiming the lead at 16-14 after a missed extra point. Johnson, a senior co-captain, then showcased his running prowess with a 14-yard gain, followed by a deep crossing route to Houghton, leading to a 15-yard run and a one-yard touchdown dive, putting Bangor up 22-16.
The electric connection between Johnson and Houghton continued with a successful two-point conversion, further extending Bangor's lead to 22-16. The Rams, who had previously lost to Portland by 16 points and the Bulldogs in the North regional final, were on the brink of a shocking upset.
However, Jones refused to yield, showcasing his versatility on both sides of the ball. He responded with a touchdown, helping Portland regain the lead at 23-22. Jones then made a crucial defensive play, intercepting a tipped ball on a third and long, forcing Johnson to take a risk.
With around five minutes to play, Portland took possession at the Bangor 37-yard line, more than enough time to secure the victory. The Bulldogs' defense swarmed the Bangor offense, resulting in a string of sacks that sealed the playoff classic between these relentless football teams.
