UK-India FTA: Textile Industry Growth & Investment Opportunities (2025)

A New Era for Textiles: Unveiling Opportunities in India's Thriving Sector

India's textile industry is experiencing a remarkable surge, creating unprecedented opportunities for collaborative growth, investment, and sourcing, especially in partnership with the UK and Singapore.

On October 29, 2025, the India ITME Society orchestrated a pivotal networking program in Singapore, titled "Fabricating the Future of Textile Industry - From Heritage to High-Tech." This exclusive event brought together key figures from the Ministry of Textiles, embassy officials, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and media representatives to foster collaboration and explore the vast potential within India's textile and textile engineering sectors. This gathering was strategically timed to coincide with the CITME+ASIA Singapore event.

Following the vibrant Diwali celebrations, the "India business evening" was organized by the India ITME Society to facilitate exploration, education, and networking for potential partnerships, new sourcing avenues, and trade alliances in textiles, textile technology, and machinery. The event attracted a diverse audience of 183 delegates representing various countries, including the USA, UK, China, and several others.

This strategic initiative, held alongside CITME-ASIA in Singapore, is a testament to the Indian textile and textile engineering industry's commitment to accelerating trade partnerships, technology sourcing, and manufacturing joint ventures. The primary goal is to achieve joint economic growth and mutual benefits for all stakeholders.

Mr. Rohit Kansal (IAS), Additional Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, highlighted India's position as a leading global hub for weaving and knitting machinery installations. He emphasized the strong expansion across the fabric and apparel value chain, positioning India as a promising destination for textile machinery investment in the coming decade. With a rapidly growing domestic market of over 1.4 billion consumers, India presents a dynamic landscape ripe with opportunities for investment and collaboration.

Under Mr. Kansal's guidance, an Indian textile and textile engineering industry delegation engaged with their counterparts from the British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA), Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI), and other prominent international organizations.

Furthermore, H.E. Dr. Shilpak Ambule (IFS), High Commissioner of India to Singapore, underscored the significance of the India-Singapore trade relationship, with Singapore being India's 6th largest trade partner and the largest in ASEAN. The textile sector is a cornerstone of this relationship, with India as a major garment supplier and Singapore serving as a crucial hub for distribution, design, and retail.

Mr. Hemant Sharma, President - Polyester, Reliance Industries Ltd., representing the Indian Textile sector, emphasized the industry's central role in driving manufacturing growth, creating jobs, boosting exports, and fostering innovation. He expressed confidence in the sector's ability to solidify its position as a global leader, contributing to India's ambitious goal of achieving a $30 trillion economy by 2047.

The recently signed UK-India FTA has garnered significant interest. Mr. Jason Kent, CEO of the British Textile Machinery Association, described the free trade agreement as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity," envisioning a new global textile order that is more balanced, sustainable, and forward-looking. This agreement creates a platform where India's manufacturing prowess and digital talent converge with the UK's expertise in design, research, and sustainability.

Mr. Sanghvi, Chairman, India ITME Society, noted the robust economic indicators, including a 25% increase in Indian spending during the 2025 Diwali festival compared to 2024, reaching USD 47.22 billion. He reaffirmed the society's commitment to facilitating business and dialogue at India ITME 2026, the premier textile engineering event in Southeast Asia, scheduled to be held in India from December 4th to 9th, 2026, at IEML, Greater Noida.
