In a recent interview with the BBC, Maggie Kang, the mastermind behind this record-breaking Netflix animated sensation, made it clear that she envisions no future for her creation beyond the animated realm.
"The unique tone and comedic elements are perfectly suited for animation," Kang explained. "It's challenging to imagine these characters in a live-action setting; it would feel too grounded and lose the magic."
Since its debut in late June, 'KPop Demon Hunters' has taken the world by storm, becoming Netflix's most-watched movie ever. The film's soundtrack dominated the Billboard charts, with four songs in the top 10, and the lead single, 'Golden,' reigned at No. 1 for eight consecutive weeks. The movie's success even spawned a sing-along version, which grossed an impressive $18 million in its opening weekend.
The story, crafted by Kang, centers on Huntr/x, a K-pop girl group with a secret identity as demon warriors. They battle the Saja Boys, a rival boy band with a sinister twist - they're demons too! Kang co-wrote and co-directed the movie, bringing this unique concept to life.
Chris Appelhans, Kang's co-director, echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the magic of animation. "Animation allows us to create composite characters with incredible attributes. Rumi, for instance, can seamlessly transition from goofy comedian to singing and performing intricate moves like a spinning back-kick, all while free-falling through the sky."
Appelhans added, "The beauty of animation is pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Many anime adaptations into live-action have felt a bit awkward."
Despite talks between Netflix and Sony about a potential sequel, Kang remains steadfast in her commitment to keeping the franchise animated. In an interview with Variety, she expressed her desire to explore the backstories of Huntr/x members Zoey and Mira, beyond the lead vocalist Rumi.
"We've left a lot of potential backstory untold. There are many unanswered questions and unexplored areas. We had to make tough choices due to the film's runtime. This was Rumi's story, but we have rich backstories for Zoey and Mira that we couldn't fully incorporate."
'KPop Demon Hunters' is currently streaming on Netflix, and Kang's vision for an animated sequel promises to delve deeper into the world she's created.
